COFFEE BACKGROUND
The Bwishaza cooperative of coffee farmers was founded in 2010; both the co-op and its members are relatively young. President Angelique Tuyisenge leads with fresh energy and new ideas. Kungahara comprises more than 200 women; each tends her trees on a small farm, around a half hectare. Members learn best practices in “farmer field school” meetings.
For Rwandans — women in particular — coffee is an extremely important industry. Following the 1994 genocide, 65% of the surviving population in Rwanda are women; today about 14% of coffee farmers there are widowed heads of household. Co-ops like Bwishaza, and women’s groups like Kungahara, are vital supports for these resourceful women.
This coffee came to us from Artisan, our longtime importer partner. Blueprint pays Artisan’s “300 Club” pricing, plus a women’s premium, for coffees from groups like Kungahara. We’re proud to support Artisan and Bwishaza’s work helping farmers improve the quality of both their coffee and their lives.
