Decaf Huila EA, Colombia – Instant Coffee
TASTE NOTES graham, apple, brown spice, nougat, malt
Description
Decaf Huila EA, Colombia Instant Coffee represents our first release of decaffeinated Instant Coffee. We collaborated with Swift Cup Coffee to bring this offering to market. Just tear open a packet, mix it with about 10 ounces of hot or cold water, and stir. The resulting brew is the next best thing to a freshly brewed cup at one of our coffee bars.
Are you doing a double take at this product? That makes sense because most freeze-dried/instant coffee is absolutely terrible. That is because the worst of the worst coffee is used to make most of the products in the grocery stores. We have been tasting soluble coffee from other roasters and have been impressed with the results. Our R&D process was lengthy and we found the brewing and dehydration process used by Swift Cup offered the best representation of our coffees.
The specialty Decaf Huila EA, Colombia Instant Coffee is an amazing alternative to all those times when you can’t get to a Blueprint Coffee Bar or you don’t have your scale, dripper, and burr grinder with you. Some great situations for Blueprint Instant:

- The office
- A pack in the glove box for road trips

ABOUT HUILA EA, COLOMBIA
Colombia produces some of the most delicious coffee in the world, and its decaf offerings are no exception. But the simple term “Colombian coffee” refers to a huge variety of flavor profiles. Many of the country’s 20 coffee-growing departments primarily consist of small, family-run farms. Microclimates and altitude also have a role in influencing the unique regional flavors.
The Huila region is located in south-central Colombia. Running through the Cordillera Mountains, the Magdalena River divides Huila. Coffee farms are located on western- and eastern- facing slopes of the mountain ranges at extremely high altitudes. As a result, coffee from the Huila region typically features a complex acidity.
Offerings such as this one are custom decaffeinated using ethyl acetate (E.A.), a solvent derived from sugarcane as it is being processed for molasses. For this reason, the coffee is known as Decaf De Caña, or “sugarcane decaf.” The green, unroasted coffee is first steamed to open the beans’ pores, allowing them to absorb the solution. Then, they enter a bath of water and E.A. This naturally draws out the caffeine without using excessive heat or high pressure, which would significantly affect taste quality. Once caffeine has been removed, through washing of the green coffee removes any remaining E.A. When the process is complete, the beans contain just 0.01 to 0.03% caffeine.
Decaf Huila delivers the sweetness of nougat and graham, without the jolt of caffeine. The balanced cup features pleasant notes of baked apple.
