We’re Returning Our Tariff Refunds to You

Burlap bags of green coffee are stacked flat on a warehouse shelf. The bag on top is printed with black text reading "UNWASHED GUJI GR-3" below the Blueprint Coffee logo.

From August of last year, when Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs went into effect, through last November, when green coffee imports were exempted, every bag of green coffee bought by a U.S. roaster came with new — and nearly constantly-changing — import tariffs. Finally, this February, the Supreme Court ruled those tariffs illegal; soon after, the federal government was ordered to refund the illegal duties.

Over the last couple of months, we have been receiving those tariff refunds from our green coffee importing partners. We’ve been monitoring the amounts very closely and as of just last week, our refunds are complete and all that was owed has arrived — in some cases, as a cash refund, and in others, in the form of credit toward future green coffee purchases.

When we first learned of the federal government’s obligation to initiate these widespread refunds, we were: 1. skeptical; 2. cautious; and 3. already considering how to make it right by our customers — who, like us, have taken a massive financial hit from this whirlwind, sweeping “experiment”.

Now, we’re happy to announce that we will be passing the tariff refunds that we’ve received on to you: our wholesale partners, online, and retail customers.

In April 2025, we saw the first huge impacts of the imposed tariffs and green coffee prices skyrocketed, forcing us to increase pricing significantly at our bi-annual pricing review in July. In January of this year we made another pricing adjustment. Then, the Supreme Court decision followed at the end of February, and the refunds were ordered. When it came time for our mid-year pricing review this June — implemented in July — we had not yet seen a single return, and were skeptical we would even see anything; we reluctantly had to raise prices again. But then, in August, communication from importers started to trickle in and the checks started showing up.

Could we hold on to the money? Yes. Could we reinvest it into inventory, building maintenance, special projects, or pad our bank accounts with operating capital? Yes. But could we – in good conscience – move forward and operate business as usual? Is that the right thing for us to do? The only answer for us is, no.

At the top of our minds is this: the end consumer ultimately paid the price of these tariffs. And now, giant corporations have raked in multiple billions in refunds, leaving everyday consumers with lighter pockets and long-lasting effects. Small businesses have been put through the wringer; it seems like each week there’s news of our friends in the restaurant and service industry – longtime institutions – shuttering.

After many conversations and lots of thought we have come up with a plan that makes sense logistically — and most importantly, one that we hope creates impactful savings for you.

Wholesale partners and website customers can use the code TARIFF-REFUND at checkout for a 5% discount on any coffee bean purchases through our website. This coupon is limited to 10 uses per customer, and only applies to roasted coffee. We’re putting a yellow banner at the top of the website with the coupon code listed, and we’ll leave it up until our pool of tariff return funds is exhausted. If you see that banner, the threshold has not been met and the discount is active. We’ll remove the banner and deactivate the coupon when the refunds are complete.

So why don’t you just lower your prices? We really, really hope that we can. Our ultimate dream is that we can make exceptionally beautiful coffee as inclusive as possible — that we don’t have to price ourselves out of the market in the name of survival. But, it’s not until our next bi-annual pricing review in December that we’ll truly have a better snapshot of the coffee market conditions. We do know, however, that the effects of climate change, volatility in the oil industry and worldwide conflict all continue to greatly affect the global supply chain, and in very direct ways, specialty coffee imports. We’re so grateful to our partners and customers for their tremendous support and loyalty over the years as we navigate these ups and downs together.
